Blog Post #1 - Fermín Gallardo - Global Issues

 • How informed are you of global issues?  

  • In my personal opinion, I believe that I am for the most part informed on global issues. Within the political science field, my passions have always been foreign policy and diplomacy. It has always amazed me to realize how increasingly interconnected we are as a globe, a network that allows us the opportunity to purchase items from just about any part of the world one pleases or with how accessible it has become to receive exposure about pop cultures from other countries.   

• What resources do you use to stay current about global issues?  

  • One tool that I rely on to stay current about global issues is history books. I have always believed that in order to gain a better understanding of current events, one must also have a general understanding of history to offer more context regarding the current event upon encountering the story as its unfolding. It doesn’t matter what history book one reads that covers whatever era it may be, but soon after reading the book in question in due time I can guarantee that you will encounter an event in the news that reminds you of the material you learned and you will already feel familiar with the news story in question. Furthermore, I have always had a strong belief that history has a tendency to repeat itself, and so as one becomes more informed of historical events, they will become less likely to be caught off guard when they encounter developing stories in the news.  

• How much of a role does the U.S. have upon countries in Central Europe? 

  • The US plays a huge role within the Central European region. The tourism industry of Germany relies heavily on US based consumers. In addition, the US and Germany are also mutually members of the G7 committee as well as mutual members of NATO. The US also has embassies in each of the Central European countries.   

• Why is it important for you to be informed about current events in Germany?   

  • It is very crucial that I stay informed of current events in Germany. For instance, Germany has become one of the economic powerhouse countries of the region, an economy that many American investors continue to back. In addition, Germany always supplies vital intelligence regarding some of our Eastern European foes. This security partnership is crucial so that we always stay one step ahead of our foes close to the region.

    Fermin, it's great to hear how educated you are on global issues especially through your passion for foreign policy and diplomacy. I agree that despite an incredibly diverse world, we are all deeply connected with one another. I think that history books are a great way to stay informed and something about reading books is far more engaging than simply reading an article online. I fully agree that history tends to repeat itself and we can do our part in preventing bad cycles from happening again by staying educated. You bring up an interesting point about the tourism industry and how the U.S. keeps this industry in Germany going through American travel and tourism. Through NATO and embassies in Central European countries, the U.S. has greater influence. It's great that you are passionate about global issues as well as staying informed of current events in Germany. As the country continues to grow and American partnership continues, it is very important we stay caught up on what is happening across the globe.

Blog Post #1 – Leah Burcham – Global Issues

Growing and maintaining a global outlook requires consistent learning from various perspectives. A large part of my learning so far on this trip has stemmed from the other students. The nature of this trip facilitates a space where everyone is interested in global affairs and history; if we were not, then we would not have participated. Everyone has unique perspectives and cultural backgrounds that influence their perception of global affairs. While I put effort into staying informed about global affairs, my peers' comments and conversations have drawn my attention to points I would not have considered on my own.      When reflecting on my knowledge of politics I feel I am generally more well informed than the average American . The keyword here is of course American , as our worldview is shaped so much by the places we live. My political knowledge consists almost entirely of news within the United States of America, with relatively little knowledge of how global issues are seen in different countries. Therefore, I feel I must amend my original statement to be that I am generally more well informed about American politics than the average American.
